Why the Bold Coast

A landscape built
for birds.

The Bold Coast sits at the convergence of the Bay of Fundy tidal system and the Atlantic Flyway β€” the great migratory corridor that stretches from the Arctic to South America. The result is one of the most ecologically diverse coastal environments in the United States. Cobscook Bay alone hosts some of the richest intertidal habitat on the East Coast, attracting shorebirds in staggering numbers during migration. Inland, the vast boreal forests of Washington County shelter species rarely found this far south. Whether you come with a life list or a pair of binoculars and beginner's curiosity, the Bold Coast delivers.

πŸ¦…
Bald Eagle
Year-Round
Washington County has one of the highest concentrations of nesting bald eagles in the Lower 48. Look along any tidal river or coastal shoreline β€” especially the Machias River and Cobscook Bay.
🐦
Atlantic Puffin
May β€” August
Nesting colonies on offshore islands, visible from Eastport and accessible via boat tours. Maine hosts the largest Atlantic puffin colonies in the U.S. β€” the Bold Coast is your best mainland viewing point.
🦒
Shorebirds
July β€” September
Semipalmated sandpipers, dunlin, and red knots stage in massive numbers along Cobscook Bay during fall migration. The tidal flats expose thousands of acres of feeding habitat at low tide.
πŸ¦‰
Boreal Owls
Winter
The boreal forests of Washington County attract Northern Saw-whet, Boreal, and Great Gray owls in winter irruption years. Remote forest roads offer the best chance at a sighting after dark.
πŸ¦β€β¬›
Warblers
May β€” June
Spring migration brings waves of warblers through the coastal forests. Spruce bogs and mixed woodlands host Blackpoll, Bay-breasted, Cape May, and rare Mourning warblers. One of the best warbler shows in New England.
🦀
Osprey
April β€” October
Osprey nest on channel markers, platforms, and tall snags throughout the region. Exceptionally easy to observe fishing in the tidal rivers and bays β€” patient birders will watch multiple dives per hour.

01
Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge
Calais & Baring
The easternmost point of the Atlantic Flyway and one of the oldest wildlife refuges in the U.S. Over 220 species recorded. Famous for the American woodcock courtship display in early spring at dusk, and an outstanding diversity of breeding warblers, shorebirds, and raptors across 30,000 acres of mixed habitat.

02
Cobscook Bay State Park
Edmunds Township
The bay's extreme tidal range β€” up to 28 feet β€” exposes vast intertidal mudflats that concentrate shorebirds during migration. Bald eagles patrol the shoreline year-round. The campground puts you on the water at dawn, which is when the action happens.

Eastport Waterfront
Eastport
Passamaquoddy Bay provides some of the best pelagic viewing from shore in the U.S. Common eiders, black guillemots, razorbills, and common murres are visible from the breakwater and downtown waterfront. Puffin boat tours depart from here in summer.

Machias River Corridor
Machias & Machiasport
The tidal sections of the Machias River between Machias and Machiasport are prime bald eagle territory. Great blue herons, belted kingfishers, and mergansers are year-round residents. The estuary draws feeding concentrations at every tide change.

Quoddy Head State Park
Lubec
The easternmost point in the U.S. is also a world-class sea-watching location. The peat bog trail harbors Palm and Yellow warblers, Lincoln's sparrows, and occasionally Boreal chickadees. In fall, hawk migration concentrates at the headland.

Seasonal Guide

Best times to
visit.

Spring
April — June
Peak migration and breeding. Woodcock displays in April, warbler waves in May, nesting eagles and osprey through June. The most species-rich season.
Summer
July — August
Puffins and seabirds peak. Shorebird migration begins in late July. Breeding activity winds down but coastal species are at their most accessible.
Fall
September — November
Spectacular shorebird staging at Cobscook Bay. Hawk migration at headlands. Waterfowl begin arriving. Foliage adds to an already stunning landscape.
Winter
December — March
Irruptive owls and finches in good years. Sea ducks offshore. Bald eagles concentrate at open water. A quieter season with high reward potential.
Tips for birding the Bold Coast
Local knowledge from people who spend time out here.
🌊
Watch the tides
The Bay of Fundy tides are the largest in North America. Shorebird activity peaks 2–3 hours before low tide when the flats are exposed but birds haven't dispersed yet.
πŸŒ…
Go at dawn
First light is the most active period for songbirds and raptors. The Bold Coast has almost no light pollution β€” mornings here are genuinely quiet and spectacular.
🦟
Bring bug protection
Black flies peak in late May and early June β€” exactly when warbler migration is at its best. Long sleeves, head nets, and DEET are not optional in the boreal forest.
πŸ—ΊοΈ
Download offline maps
Cell service is limited across much of Washington County. Download eBird maps and offline Gaia GPS tiles before you leave town. Many of the best spots have no signal.
πŸš—
Drive slowly
Some of the best birding happens from forest roads and Route 1 pullouts. Slow down, roll the windows down, and listen. Many species are heard before they're seen.
πŸ“±
Use eBird hotspots
Washington County has a well-documented eBird database. Search hotspots before you visit β€” Moosehorn, Cobscook, and Quoddy Head all have substantial checklists going back decades.
