A beach made entirely of polished stones that clatter and sing when the tide rolls through. Kids will spend hours collecting stones, throwing them in the water, and listening to the sound. Free, in Machiasport.

Saltwater beach on one side, warm freshwater pond on the other — separated by a narrow strip of sand. The pond is perfect for young swimmers. Picnic areas, playground, and hiking trails on site.

The red and white striped lighthouse at the easternmost point of the United States. Walk the coastal trail, watch for whales and seals from the headland, and explain to kids that the sun rises here first.

Rocky coves at low tide reveal a whole world — periwinkles, hermit crabs, sea urchins, starfish, and anemones. Gleason Cove near Eastport is one of the best spots on the Bold Coast. Bring water shoes.

Pull off on the refuge roads before 9am and wait. Bald eagles overhead within minutes most mornings. Bring binoculars and a field guide — kids love checking species off a list.

Sunrise Canoe & Kayak in Machias offers guided and self-guided trips on the Machias River — flat water stretches that are manageable for older kids. Wildlife sightings on almost every trip.

Washington County has some of the darkest skies on the entire East Coast. On a clear night away from town, the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. Bring a blanket and a star chart — it's genuinely jaw-dropping for kids who've never seen it.

The largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere, visible from the Eastport waterfront at peak tidal flow. Check tide tables and time your visit right — kids are equal parts terrified and fascinated.
